How do people move out of hate?
In the U.S., there isn’t a systematic approach to engaging with members of extremist groups, including white supremacists. Outreach is generally left to “formers” – people who are no longer with the movement. Each organization or individual offering a path out decides how best to do it. There’s little training, few defined best practices and not much data about what succeeds.
On December 2, join us for a special virtual Podcast Passport event. Odette Yousef, host of Motive, speaks to experts in the field about the state of white supremacist organizations in America today, how intervention efforts differ in European countries and what practices the U.S. might adopt. The event will also explore if it’s possible to address the rise of hate movements today if the U.S. doesn’t acknowledge the role white supremacy has played in our history and institutions.
Throughout the event viewers will have an opportunity to ask questions about the making of Motive Season 3 as well as share their opinions on what the U.S. should do to combat white supremacy.
Tickets to this virtual event are available for a suggested event fee or at no cost.
To understand the white supremacist movement today, don’t look at the old guys in white sheets. Look at the last time a wave of hate pulled in young Americans. Look at the neo-Nazi skinheads who wrote the playbook for the recruitment of young people.
Season 3 of WBEZ’s Motive podcast examines the origins of the youth white supremacist movement in America.
