Sovereign Citizen

It’s not unusual to find judges and prosecutors inside a federal courtroom. What is unusual is when they’re the ones taking the witness stand. But that’s exactly what happened yesterday here in Chicago. Former federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald and U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow were just two of those questioned in the prosecution of Cherron Phillips. Phillips filed multi-billion dollar liens against the home of Fitzgerald and others. It’s her right, she says, as a “sovereign citizen”. Mark Pitcavage of the Anti Defamation League explains the history and beliefs of the sovereign citizens. Photo: Flickr/nealunger
