Late last month the Chicago City Council passed a long-awaited ordinance that allows community gardens to accept outside food scraps for their compost piles. This means your egg shells and apple peels can now be turned into rich soil instead of sitting in a landfill. For the city’s environmental advocates, this might be the next best thing to a full municipal composting system. When will the rules go into effect? What can you really dump at these locations?
