One of the coolest attractions at Lincoln Park Zoo isn’t an animal. It’s architecture.

The new structurally-expressive, open-air pavilion located on the South Pond of Lincoln Park Zoo was completed last summer as part of a complete redo that turned the pond into a restored ecosystem surrounded by a new boardwalk. Designed by Studio/Gang Architects, the firm responsible for a host of great new buildings in town, including Aqua Tower, the structure is designed to be reminiscent of a tortoise shell. The firm also oversaw the restoration of the pond and designed the boardwalk..

The pavilion is made of Douglas fir with its opening covered by opaque fiberglass. Officially called the People’s Gas Education Pavilion, the structure is designed to house educational activities and outreach efforts related to the surrounding ecosystem.
