At a forum Tuesday, ratepayers said they can’t afford to pay more for gas. “Don’t come asking poor people for more money,” one said.

Peoples Gas is seeking a $402 million rate hike in order to help fund a replacement pipe project the utility says is necessary. The Illinois Commerce Commission has until the end of the year to rule on the rate increase request.
