Bulls Head Coach Fred Hoiberg was so beloved in his hometown of Ames, Iowa that he was nicknamed “The Mayor” after receiving write-in votes for the office. His popularity shouldn’t be a surprise considering he was quarterback of the high school football team, captain of the basketball team, and a star guard for Iowa State University.
His solid NBA career was cut short by a health issue, but that didn’t stop the determined Hoiberg from continuing his passion for basketball. Hoiberg opens up to WBEZ sports contributor Cheryl Raye-Stout about growing up in a college town, the dangerous heart that could have killed him, and the ups and downs of rebuilding the Bulls into a contender.
