As thousands of black Chicago Public School students leave the district, many are ending up in segregated, low-income schools in the south suburbs and Northwest Indiana. It’s a hidden reality in the dominant narrative that African Americans leaving Chicago are “reverse migrating” to the Atlanta and other places in the South.

The changes have major ramifications for those who remain in CPS. There are dozens of under-enrolled schools on the South and West Sides of the city that could close, and Latinos are fast becoming the majority in the district. The outflow from CPS also affects the thousands of students who end up in schools in Gary, Indiana, Harvey, Illinois and other places where the schools are struggling.
