By Michael PuentePurdue University’s marching band is known for having the world’s largest bass drum on the football field.
Members of the band are building another one but not for the field.
This bass drum will go where no other bass drum has gone before: over, and likely into, Lake Michigan.
Members of Purdue’s “All-American” marching band will try to get the drum to fly as far as possible over Lake Michigan.
They’re now building the drum and will enter it in Saturday’s “flugtag” competition. One person will pilot the “flying” drum.
The goal of the flugtag competition is to fly a human-powered aircraft as far over the lake as possible.
Team captain Chris Yamamoto says band members chose the big drum design because it is iconic throughout the Big Ten Conference.
The big drum flugtag will arrive in Chicago from its home in West Lafayette, Indiana on Friday.
The competition will take place at North Avenue Beach.
