The Chicago Housing Authority is retooling its master plan that’s supposed to de-concentrate poverty.

And resident leaders want to weigh in with a new report that lists a set of recommendations.

Amid an economic downturn, CHA must figure what to do with vacant land and vacant units. Leaders from public housing councils have their own ideas.

For instance, residents want existing public housing units to be rehabbed. They also want CHA to adhere to federal rules that say the agency must provide opportunities for resident-owned businesses.

In mixed-income developments, where there are empty market-rate units, residents are asking CHA to turn those into public housing units.

Mixed-income housing has been the centerpiece of CHA’s Plan for Transformation, the largest public housing overhaul in the country — 10-plus years in the making.

CHA says it is reviewing the resident recommendations in the report.
