A Northwest Indiana professor accused of making anti-Muslim comments has been cleared of harassment charges.

Political science Professor Maurice Eisenstein was accused by Purdue University Calumet students of making anti-Muslim comments and harassing Muslim students in class. That led to student protests on Purdue’s Hammond campus last fall and even calls by some students for Eisenstein’s firing.

But Eisenstein said Wednesday Purdue dropped its investigation because he’s done nothing wrong.

“There is nothing of which I have taught, or done or said that requires me to make any changes,” Eisenstein said.“In most cases, students’ lied, made up stories. The things they claim that I have said is either taken completely out of context or false.”

But a Purdue Calumet spokesman, Wes Lukoshus, said the university cannot say anything about the case because it’s a personnel issue.

“Consistent with Purdue University policy, we do not comment publicly about situations or decisions involving university personnel,” Lukoshus wrote in a statement. “We support the first amendment rights of all individuals regardless of point of view.”
