On this week’s Global Notes, Jerome and Radio M host Tony Sarabia get a music lesson from Chicagoan Felipe Fraga, who plays the Brazilian cuíca, a percussion instrument that’s far from your average drum. Players use a wet cloth to rub a stick inside the instrument, creating a surprising array of sounds. Accompanied by other musicians, Felipe plays some samba for us. Also, we look back on Rio de Janeiro in September 1969, when left-wing activists kidnapped Charles Burke Elbrick, the U.S. Ambassador to Brazil. The BBC’s Witness speaks with one of the kidnappers. And World Vision Report’s Kelley Weiss has the story of açai berries, the Amazonian “super-fruit.”
