On this week’s Global Notes, Jerome and Radio M host Tony Sarabia get a music lesson from Chicagoan Felipe Fraga, who plays the Brazilian cuíca, a percussion instrument that’s far from your average drum. Players use a wet cloth to rub a stick inside the instrument, creating a surprising array of sounds. Accompanied by other musicians, Felipe plays some samba for us. Also, we look back on Rio de Janeiro in September 1969, when left-wing activists kidnapped Charles Burke Elbrick, the U.S. Ambassador to Brazil. The BBC’s Witness speaks with one of the kidnappers.
