The author of Making the Second Ghetto has died. Arnold Hirsch wrote the scholarly book about race and housing in Chicago from 1940 to 1960 more than three decades ago. Hirsch detailed racist housing policies that kept blacks out of white neighborhoods. It’s an influential book in urban studies and history. Hirsch’s memorial service is Friday in Oak Park.
