Documentary Examines What it Means to be Arab and Muslim in America

A recent Pew study found that nearly half of all Americans believe that a substantial segment of the U.S. Muslim population is anti-American. Last week, President Obama was criticized by several Republican presidential candidates after he made an official visit to a mosque. There has been a rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes. Filmmaker Usama Alshaibi, an Iraqi-American, found his own family was personally impacted by growing anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States. He took on the topic in his latest documentary “American Arab.” Alshaibi joins us to talk about the film and what it means to be Muslim in America. The film airs tonight on WTTW.
