President Donald Trump is proposing to cut a third of the U.S. development budget and merge what’s left with regular State Department operations. Those proposed cuts to foreign aid have angered people across the ideological spectrum.

Andrew Natsios, a former administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), says that the cuts come as no surprise because international aid is the most invisible expense in the U.S. budget. For Rafia Zakaria, an international attorney and Pakistani-American writer, international aid over the last several decades has provided little more than a band-aid to systemic violence worldwide.
