By Jerome McDonnellThis week is Germany Week in Chicago’s Daley Plaza, with events featuring German food, language, music and more. As the city celebrates the connections between the U.S. and Germany, Worldview’s Jerome McDonnell sits down with Emily Haber, who has served as the German ambassador to the United States since June 2018. Particularly since President Trump’s inauguration, the U.S. and Germany have not always seen eye to eye on issues of international policy. Regarding NATO, President Trump recently said, “Germany, to be honest, is not paying their fair share.” Earlier this year, Germany joined France and Britain in creating a mechanism for financial flow to Iran that would not violate U.S. sanctions. The U.S. ambassador to Germany has spoken out against that mechanism. In this discussion, Haber helps listeners understand some of these differences between U.S. and German political stances.
