Milos Stehlik Interviews Jia Zhangke On New Film 'Ash is Purest White'

WBEZ Film Contributor and Director at Facets Chicago, Milos Stehlik, interviews the world’s great filmmakers on Worldview. Today, he talks with Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke about his new film, Ash is Purest White. Jia is a prominent member of China’s “Sixth Generation” filmmakers. They get around state censorship and funding restrictions by self-producing or seeking foreign funding for subversive films that explore Chinese social issues. Ash is Purest White stars actress Zhao Tao, the devoted lover of a mob boss. She uses his gun to protect him during a gang fight, is caught by the police and refuses to incriminate him as the firearm’s owner. Tune in to hear Jia chat about his career of social critique through cinema. Ash is Purest White is now playing at select theaters in Chicago.
