On Thursday, the Trump Administration released the “2019 Trafficking in Persons Report,” a comprehensive document that has been released annually by the State Department since 2001. The report evaluates governments’ responses to trafficking across the globe. President Trump asserted his commitment to preventing trafficking when he wrote in a 2017 executive order that, “My Administration continues to work to drive out the darkness human traffickers cast upon our world.” According to Jenna Krajeski, a reporter who covers human trafficking for the Fuller Project, the Trump administration has in many ways weakened protections for individuals vulnerable to trafficking, however. In a recent article in Foreign Policy titled “Foreign Policy is Trump’s Human Trafficking Record Is Fake News,” Krajeski points out that the Trump administration has removed protections for LGBTQ individuals and that privately owned immigration detention centers contracted by the Department of Homeland Security are facing lawsuits alleging labor trafficking, for example. Krajeski joins us to discuss the new Trafficking in Persons Report, along with Elyse Dobney, program manager for the Salvation Army’s “Stop it Initiative Against Human Trafficking.”
