#WVBus: Cancelled Dearborn Arab Festival Awaits More Tolerant Times

Hundreds of citizens, including many religious leaders and elected officials link arms in front of the Islamic Center of America in 2011 after a vigil sponsored by the mosque and the Interfaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit. The meeting was in response to Florida based Pastor Terry Jones who has said he intends to protest in front of Islamic Center of America Friday. The protest, according to the permit request, is against Sharia and jihad. If it happens had planned, it would have been in front of the largest mosque in North America in a city that claims one of the most densely populated Muslim enclaves in the United States.

The Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, is the largest mosque in the nation. Unfortunately, hate groups from across the country have used that visibility to turn the mosque into a site of Islamophobic protests - most notably Gainesville, Florida pastor Terry Jones’ publicly announced, but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to organize a public burning of the Quran in front of the building. When Worldview was on the road in July, producer Steve Bynum chatted with the Center’s Executive Administrator, Kassem Allie, about how he and the other members of the Center’s community have responded when faced with hate.
