For the third year now, activists staged Black Friday protests on Michigan Avenue. And this year, their message was wide-ranging. The protests started in 2015 after the release of the video showing police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting teenager LaQuan McDonald. And the protesters — flanked by cops — were still calling for Van Dyke’s conviction today.

But their message also focuses on creation of a new Civilian Police Accountability group. And calls by Dorothy Holmes to reopen the case of her son Ronald Johnson who also died in a police shooting. Activists also protested police torture, Palestinian occupation, the government in the Philippines and capitalism.
