Single scenes from a full length film can take hours and even days to shoot. But one film crew in Chicago plans to shoot its entire movie in just one take.

“Cut” isn’t a word you’ll hear very often during the filming of the thriller, Helix. Director Aram Rappaport says this is why.

RAPPAPORT: This is a true story and it happened in real time. So I think to do it justice, it’d only be fair to sort of explain the series of events without excuse for movie making.

The movie is filming once a day in Chicago for five consecutive days. Rappaport and his crew have until Friday to get it right. Chicago Film Office Director Rich Moskal says it’s the first time the city’s seen a project like this.

MOSKAL: So much of it is operations based. Some very critical meetings and planning with the police department and all of that had to take place in advance. So it’s a rather ambitious project.

The movie takes the crew through about 20 Chicago locations including Navy Pier, Lake Shore Drive and the lakefront path. Moskal says the Chicago Police help create a bubble for the crew. Rappaport and his team are ready to improv in unexpected situations.

RAPPAPORT: There is traffic in real life and there are long pauses and there is people that might talk to you or run away if they see a gun. All of that really happens. For me, it’s just a blessing that we get so many people walking around at 7 in the morning.

Rappaport says he’s confident he’ll have his one good 90-minute take by the end of the week. Helix is expected to release this fall.
