The Illinois state budget crisis has impacted the lives of state workers, Chicago Public Schools, and now young Illinois doctors.

According to a new report in Crain’s Chicago Business, new graduates of the state’s two publicly funded medical schools are fleeing Illinois to finish their residency elsewhere. The number of medical graduates from SIU and the University of Illinois College of Medicine who are completing their residencies in Illinois has hit a combined all-time low.While it’s unclear if the budget crisis is the sole reason for the decline, one thing is certain doctors are leaving the state and may never return.
