A mother in suburban Schiller Park says she’ll comply with a deportation order tonight — 18 years after arriving in the United States.

Chicago Public Radio’s Chip Mitchell has more.

Janina Wasilewski arrived in Chicago in 1989, seeking asylum from authoritarian rule in Poland.

But the U.S. government sought to deport her after the Soviet collapse.

Immigration authorities say Wasilewski disregarded their orders for years.

Her husband, soon to become a U.S. citizen, is staying here.

She’s taking their 5-year-old son.

This morning their attorney, Royal Berg, is faxing the U.S. Supreme Court a request to stay the deportation.

The judge who’ll hear the request is John Paul Stevens.

BERG: “We’re asking Justice Stevens to prevent this suffering from happening and to keep this family from being torn apart.”

A bill before the U.S. Senate would provide a path to citizenship for many undocumented immigrants.

But not in time for the Wasilewskis.

The flight to Warsaw leaves tonight at 9:55.
