Chicago’s Bethany Hospital isn’t providing mental health and OBGYN services mandated by the state.

That’s according to some area politicians and clergy members.

Chicago Alderman Ed Smith says the West Side hospital is turning patients away in violation of a state ruling.

“They use this community and they’re going to walk away,” Smith says. “This is a rich, rich corporation and to dump this community the way they’re trying to do, we’re not gonna let that happen.”

Oak Brook-based Advocate Health Care runs Bethany.

It tried to eliminate the units last winter, but a state planning board didn’t allow the cuts.

A spokesperson for Advocate says services at the hospital are up and running.

He says physicians are accepting new patients in the OBGYN and mental health units.
