Two Chicago aldermen are pushing an ordinance that would force felons convicted of gun offenses to register with the police.

Alderman Ike Carothers is a sponsor of the proposal.

He says it would help deter gun violence.

“We’re very successful in reducing crime in Chicago and we just think it’s another step in the right direction because you have to realize that so many of the crimes we have, violent crimes, actually result in a person using a handgun,” Carothers says.

Under the proposed ordinance, gun offenders would have to provide detailed personal information and report to the police in person every six months.

A spokesperson for the Illinois National Rifle Association says the registry won’t work as intended.

He says it would divert resources from fighting crime and create more bureaucracy.
