A few years ago, the city and mayor were all very excited about the promise of aquaponics to bring local, sustainable produce to Chicago all year round. There was talk of schools using it to teach kids science, math and marketing. There was talk of a local seafood industry in Chicago. But then those plans came quietly to a halt when health department concerns shut down the public part of these programs. In recent months, however, those health department hurdles have been surmounted and aquaponics has started to bubble up again. WBEZ’s Monica Eng recently attended the first ever aquaponics luncheon at Lane Tech High School where students harvested and ate the tilapia, greens and herbs they would eat that afternoon with the help of a local chef and their teacher Cristen Lain. We hear how that went, and talk to Cristen Lain, aquaponics instructor Lane Tech High School, and Kassie Hinrichsen, Education Coordinator at Plant Chicago, the non-profit arm of The Plant.
