Snow has continued across much of northern Illinois as motorists make their way home from work.

State Police spokesman Sgt. Luis Gutiérrez says day-shift troopers are working late to handle an increase in emergency calls.

“Conditions are very hazardous anywhere north of I-80,” Gutiérrez says. “We do have a lot of roads that are snow-covered, icy conditions. So we’re requesting the motorist, obviously, to take very due caution when they’re driving through those areas, as it has become very hazardous out there.”

Some communities, including north suburban Gurnee, have reported they’re running low on road salt.
