Immigrant advocates in Chicago say they are hoping the public keeps in mind a few things about the U.S. immigration system before listening to tonight’s State of the Union Address. Lawrence Benito of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights says that he believe President Trump will discuss his proposal to offer 1.8 million so-called Dreamers a path to citizenship in exchange for building a wall along the southern border and tighter restrictions on family-based immigration. Benito says building that wall would be a waste of money because net migration along the southern border has slowed. He also said that the family-based migration system is not broken and does not need to change.
