The former town president of west suburban Cicero is no longer in federal prison. Betty Loren-Maltese was convicted in 2002 on federal racketeering and fraud charges.

Loren-Maltese served more than six-and-a-half years in federal prisons in California. She was transferred to a half-way house Thursday, according to a spokeswoman for the bureau of prisons - who says, unless Loren-Maltese gets in some sort of trouble, she’s expected to be released on February 12 of next year.

She’s been incarcerated since January of 2003 following her conviction the year before for her role in an insurance scheme that cost Cicero more than $10-million. During a hearing about three years ago, Loren-Maltese asked federal Judge John Grady to shorten her sentence so she could be reunited with her young daughter. But the judge refused.
