An education watchdog group says two Illinois gubernatorial candidates need to improve their education proposals.

A+ Illinois spokesperson Bindu Batchu says neither Judy Baar Topinka’s plan to build a casino in Chicago, nor Rod Blagojevich’s proposal to lease the state lottery would lead to sustainable school funds.

“Gaming first is regressive, putting more burden on low and moderate income families and beyond that it’s a fairly volatile funding source. It doesn’t provide the stability and security that school districts need to plan their budgets year to year,” she says.

Batchu says the candidates also rely too much on property taxes to fund education.

The group released report cards with low marks for both of them.

It did not release a report card for Green Party candidate Rich Whitney.
