By Susie AnStarting Saturday, Borders will begin liquidation sales for 200 of its bookstores nationwide.
Borders says it is not going out of business, but the company says it’s shuttering underperforming stores over the next several weeks. That includes at least 16 stores in Illinois, but the Borders in the Loop on State Street will remain open.
On Saturday the company will start liquidating more than $350 million in merchandise at discounts ranging from 20 to 40 percent.
The bookseller based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this week.
Borders.com will continue operating while the company carries out its reorganization process. The company says it plans to significantly improve its internet operation over the next several weeks.
