Chicago Alderman are sounding off on Mayor Richard Daley’s plan to cut $20 million from the city’s budget.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says the slow economy is biting into the city’s revenue. So he’s ordering a string of cost-cutting measures that includes a suspension of overtime. And that worries Alderman Isaac Carothers. He says the police department is already under enough pressure.

CAROTHERS: If we start cutting overtime in that area, we’ll find out that we already have a difficult time in clearing our murder cases. And you’re going to find that even more difficult if police are not going to be able to put the time they need to into those cases.

Alderman Joe Moore says he welcomes the plan. But he’s concerned about the impact it will have on the city.

MOORE: We shouldn’t fool the public. There will be a consequence. There’s only so much you can cut before it does have an impact on services.

Daley says layoffs could be in store if the economy continues to decline.
