A Chicago police officer involved in a fatal crash last Thanksgiving may find himself back in court. We report from our West Side bureau.

Twenty-two-year-old Miguel Flores and 21-year-old Erick Lagunas died after off-duty officer John Ardelean broadsided their car with his SUV on Chicago’s Northwest Side. A Cook County judge this month dismissed felony drunk-driving charges against Ardelean. That ruling led to accusations that prosecutors protected the officer.

The State’s Attorney’s office denies those allegations, but now says it’s taking a fresh look at the case. The office’s Number 2 prosecutor, Robert Milan, met yesterday with the victims’ families and their attorney. He’s Daniel O’Connor.

O’CONNOR: It’s the first time that I’ve had any interaction with him on this matter. And he seems like a decent guy who’s going to take a look at it, and we trust that he will.

The State’s Attorney’s office told Chicago Public Radio it’s considering all prosecution options and will decide within a week or so.

The families, meanwhile, are preparing a civil suit.
