The latest U.S. census shows Chicago’s Hispanic population is increasing.

Ken Johnson is a demographer at Loyola University.

He says the growth isn’t just because of immigration.

“There are a fairly large number of Hispanic babies being born and relatively few Hispanic deaths so it’s actually that natural increase of the population which is fueling most of this Hispanic growth, not immigration,” Johnson says.

Hispanics now make up about 28-percent of the population of Chicago.

Johnson says Chicago’s white and black populations are decreasing because they’re leaving the city.
