Chicago drivers may get hit hard by this year’s pothole season. But they may not have to foot the bill alone.

Ken Papas says he was born into the tire business. He’s the owner of Ashland Tire and Auto on Chicago’s North Side. He says tire repairs this month are up 40 percent compared to last February. Papas says he feels bad for drivers.

PAPAS: Their day starts off good and before they ever get to work their day is ruined. You know, they blow a tire or wheel and they got damage that’s 200, 300, 500, a thousand dollars.

But pothole victims might not have to foot the bill alone. Donal Quinlan is a spokesman for Chicago’s Committee on Finance. He says claims less than $1500 can sometimes be settled with the city.

QUINLAN: If they get a bent rim or a flat tire or the need tire replacement, they should just file the bill with their claim.

The city could pay up to half the damages. And drivers can expect a check in four to six months.
