“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear” is something horror fiction author H.P. Lovecraft once said. As we head toward another Halloween, we’ve been thinking about the kind of fear you encountered as a child that still sticks with you despite the time that has passed. Anthony Lacanina, a graduate student at the University of Texas, studies how the brain creates, stores and accesses “fear memories.” He also produces and hosts a podcast about neuroscience called Brain Matters and joins us to discuss the brain’s response to fear.
