Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns is this year’s designated book for One Book, One Chicago. It documents the journey of three Southern Blacks headed north during the Great Migration. Since the turn of the century, Belgium, France, England and China, most recently, have witnessed waves of migration. For the past two decades China has been experiencing what has been called the largest migration in history. Workers from rural areas are migrating to large cities like Beijing. In spite of being Chinese citizens, “hukou” restrictions limit their access to health care, education, and food.
