Chicago Mayor Richard Daley’s administration is catching fire for siding against a supportive-housing plan in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. We report from our West Side bureau.

Supportive housing takes on homelessness by combining affordable apartments with social services. Two nonprofit groups are proposing such a combination for the Sachs Building. That’s a six-story landmark at Milwaukee, Diversey and Kimball.

The city’s Department of Planning and Development has rejected the supportive-housing proposal. The city backs a less-expensive plan. It would mix some affordable apartments with artist studios. The local alderman, Rey Colón, has signed on.

COLON: I know there’s a lot of hopes on that one building, but the supportive housing doesn’t have to be there. It could be anywhere.

Ald. Colón vows to help find an alternative to the Sachs Building for supportive housing. His critics say he’s been talking like that for years.

The city-backed plan will go before Chicago’s Community Development Commission, probably this spring.
