Democratic committeemen have chosen a new Cook County commissioner. It comes just in time for a critical vote on the county board tomorrow.

Democratic committeemen met behind closed doors at a taco joint on Chicago’s Northwest Side to interview six candidates. They ranged from a political consultant to an executive with Walgreens.

After some political bickering and maneuvering, a slight majority of the committeemen chose Edwin Reyes. He’s an Illinois state trooper who has been on governor detail the past three years and he’s already preparing for a critical vote scheduled to take place tomorrow.

REYES: We can’t keep taxing the average worker. I mean, those are the people who are getting unemployed. Reyes says he will cast what’s likely to be the 14th and deciding vote to overturn a veto from Board President

Todd Stroger to cut part of the county’s sales tax rate. Chicago Alderman Richard Mell, one of the committeemen, says Reyes’ position on the sales tax is part of the reason he was selected.
