By Jennifer BrandelThe U.S. Supreme Court denied an appeal made by media mogul Conrad Black.
Conrad Black is the former head of Hollinger International. The media empire once included the Chicago Sun-Times, along with many other papers. But in 2009 the Sun-Times was forced to file for bankruptcy protection. That’s because Black and colleagues embezzled money from their firm plus the Sun-Times had to pay Black’s astronomical legal fees.
Since then Black’s convictions have been playing out like a ping-pong match between the US Supreme Court and lower courts. Last year the Supreme Court curtailed the honest services fraud law and ordered the lower courts to take another look at Black’s case. But the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a fraud conviction. That caused Black’s most recent appeal back to the Supreme Court, which was denied today.
Black is scheduled to be re-sentenced on June 24th before a federal judge in Chicago.
