Some Cook County residents will find their property tax bills in the mailbox next week, and some county commissioners say they’re long overdue.

The Cook County Board on Tuesday gave the okay to create a commission that will brainstorm ways to get bills out faster. Republican Commissioner Peter Silvestri  says the current system is too complicated and contributes to property tax bills being mailed out later.

SILVESTRI: Why is it—to get one tax bill out—you’ve literally got five different agencies involved? Three different elected offices, an elected board, and a department under the president of the county board? It makes no sense.

Silvestri and other commissioners would like to see one office be responsible for issuing and collecting bills. And they’d also like to see that happen sooner rather than later.
