As we pointed out recently on the Morning Shift, there are 48 statues or busts of men in Chicago’s parks, but NONE of women. But there’s a group pushing for a monument to honor journalist and civil rights activist Ida B. Wells. They want the statue erected in Bronzeville. The effort goes back four years and it hasn’t been an easy one. Now, thanks to a new fundraising plans including a soon-to-be-launched Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, the group behind the project is more hopeful than ever that they’ll be able to build a monument to one of Chicago’s most accomplished women. Michelle Duster, co-committee chair of the project and a writer who is also the great granddaughter of Ida B. Wells, and Tony Rogers, co-committee chair who’s spearheading fundraising efforts, talk about the Ida B. Wells monument.
