Gov. Bruce Rauner says the sale of the James R. Thompson Center could benefit Chicago Public Schools. But the Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office isn’t having it.

Rauner has been pushing the sale of the dilapidated government building for months, but it’s caught up in the ongoing fight between the governor and Emanuel.  To make his case on Friday, Rauner brought reporters into a dingy room in the Thompson Center garage to point out a heating and cooling system that needs an $80 million replacement.

Rauner said new legislation would give CPS up $45 million a year off the sale.

“The mayor is throwing up roadblocks as part of the delay. It seems to be a tag team effort between the mayor and the speaker to come up with delaying reasons. This transaction is a home run,” Rauner said.

Emanuel calls this a “political stunt” and said the governor should spend his time passing a balanced budget that funds education.
