Chicago Public Schools is changing its mind about closing some schools on the West Side. Parents had warned their children would have to traverse dangerous gang lines to get to other schools. At a public hearing Monday night, the district announced Beidler and Cather schools will not be consolidated. The district last week scratched a plan to merge Tilton and Marconi schools. The move makes elementary school parents happy. But two charter high schools are now in a difficult situation. They were going to take over the vacated school buildings in the fall. District officials say the elementary schools could still be closed in future years for under-enrollment. The board will vote later this month on seven additional school closings.
