Chicago Mayor Richard Daley gathered ideas Friday about reducing violence in the city. But he didn’t spell out any new programs or promise funding.

After a week with at least 12 fatal shootings, Mayor Daley invited two dozen religious leaders, social-service providers and community activists to City Hall. They met behind closed doors for about 90 minutes with top police and school officials.

The participants say they had an open floor to generate ideas for curbing violence. The ideas ranged from conflict-resolution training to summer jobs, from mentoring to park activities.

Afterwards Mayor Daley stressed the role of parents.

DALEY: I want you to call a meeting in your home, with your children and loved ones. I want you to go next door and talk to those children. I want the parents of the block to say, ‘This block will be free of violence.’

The police department, for its part, says it’s planning to deploy SWAT teams and other specialized units to troubled parts of the city.
