A local transportation expert says cost over-runs on the Dan Ryan could jeopardize other road improvements.

David Schulz, director of the Infrastructure Technology Institute at Northwestern University, says, “Initially the impact will be within Cook County and the surrounding five collar counties: Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Will. But this is such a big hit, that it’s likely this impact will be felt statewide.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation says the price of construction on the Dan Ryan has jumped from $550 million dollars to $800 million.

A spokesperson for the department says rate increases in steel, asphalt, and concrete have contributed to the extra expenses.
