The Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund Program’s role is to clean up the country’s most contaminated sites, particularly those posing a risk to public health. The first Superfund site on EPA chief Scott Pruitt’s list to visit? East Chicago. For years the neighborhood has suffered from contaminated water and soil. When Pruitt visited East Chicago in April, he pledged to help the area by cleaning up the pollution and cracking down on companies that were found to be in violation of pollution standards. But those efforts have stalled.
