One hundred and 14 years ago, the opening of the World’s Columbian Exposition kicked off summer in Chicago with a bang.

About half the U.S. population at the time attended the fair.

But some of them never returned to their homes.

In 2003, writer Erik Larson’s Devil in the White City brought to life the glory, grime and gruesomeness of Chicago’s first World’s Fair and the event’s most famous attendee, who turned out to be the nation’s first serial killer.

Now you too can follow the footsteps of the people who made their way to the exposition, into the hands of the killer, and onto the pages of Larson’s book—with a new tour led by the Chicago Architecture Foundation.

Gianofer Fields brings us the first part of a trip back in time when the eyes of the world were on Chicago as a madman stalked the city.
