For the first time in Illinois a convicted drug dealer has been charged with homicide for a death believed to be caused by Fentanyl-laced heroin.

Corey Crump was charged for the death of 17-year-old Joe Krecker earlier this year. Krecker was found in his car and is believed to have purchased drugs from Crump on the West Side.

Chicago Police Superintendent Phil Cline says the teenager’s death should encourage people to stop using drugs.

“There’s never been a more crucial time to get off of drugs than now because not only are the drugs deadly, but the things that they’re lacing the drugs with are even more deadly and that shows in Joe’s death,” he says.

Approximately 185 people have died in Cook County from adding the painkiller to heroin.
