DuPage County is taking Crisis Intervention Training into its own hands to teach more officers how to effectively respond to people experiencing a mental health crisis. CIT trainings teach cops how to spot mental illness — and get people to treatment. President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing recently said the training should be mandatory.
The state of Illinois offers certified trainings — but according to Chief David Webb, head of the DuPage County Police Chiefs Association, those trainings are scarce. So the association is partnering with the county health department to create a CIT Coordinator, who will be available to all officers in DuPage County.
